Learn The Moves, The Technique and Style

This workshop is designed for dancers who wish to take their dancing to another level and push their capabilities beyond their current level, in a supportive environment.

An intense, yet fun workshop, which will increase your repertoire of Lindy Hop and Jazz movement.
In addition to learning new moves, you should leave the workshop, with a clear understanding of lead, follow techniques and how the dance should look and feel at different tempos during social dancing.

Whilst you can book with a partner, this is not essential, as everyone will have the chance to rotate.
There will be workshops for two levels: Beginner- Improver and Intermediate-Advanced.

Swing & Jive Competition Rules

Judging will be based on a points system. Points will be awarded for Presentation, Musical Interpretation, and Technique relevant to that of a social swing dancer.

Competitors will dance with a partner of their choice to music chosen by Lindy Jazz.

A definite lead and follow must be demonstrated.

80% of dancing must be recognisable as Swing ie Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Ballroom Jive or Modern Jive.

Airsteps will not be allowed; Lindy Jazz’s definition of an Airstep is both feet of the person being led may leave the floor as long as one foot remains below the waist of their partner. Disqualification from the competition will be automatic should a couple attempt any Airsteps.

Teachers and professionals are not allowed to enter the Beginner or Intermediate categories. Lindy Jazz’s definition of a teacher or professional is anyone who has been paid for teaching any form of swing-related dance.

The minimum entry age for this category is 16

The Judges decision is final.

Lindy Jazz reserves the right to change the programme and competition if necessary without consultation.

The event will be recorded by film, video and photograph; these may be used for Lindy Jazz promotional purposes without any obligation.

Lindy Jazz accepts no responsibility for loss or injury to persons or possessions in relation to this event.

Categories

BEGINNER
The Beginner category is recommended for those who have danced for 12 months or less but do not feel that they have reached Intermediate level

INTERMEDIATE
The Intermediate category is recommended for those who have danced for 1-2 years but do not feel that they have reached Advanced level.

ADVANCED
The Advanced section is recommended for dancers who have danced for more than 2 years on a regular basis. You have solid lead and follow techniques. You dance with flair, style, and pizzazz. If you’re up for a challenge, then this level is for you. Teachers can enter at the advanced category.
Judging Criteria
To help you get the most out of the competition the details below indicate what the judges are looking for and how you will be scored on your performance.

What the Judges are looking for:
Presentation
This is primarily a social dance competition. Credit will be given to couples who are clearly interacting well with each other and having fun. This sense of fun will in turn be conveyed to the audience.

Musicality, Interpretation
Are the couples interpreting the music? Are they making good use of the music? Are the couples truly dancing with each other and to the music or are they just stepping through the moves?

Technique, Variety
Are the moves executed with good technique? Are they exercising good floorcraft? Are they considerate to others on the floor? Is there a clear lead and follow? Is there a good variety of moves? Are the moves executed well and do they flow?

Music
All music will be chosen by Lindy Jazz. Music will be selected from the Swing genre, to suit the respective categories. Music for the beginners’ category will be within the tempo range of 120-160 beats per minute. Intermediate will be in the range of 120-170, and advanced in the range 120-200.
